“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before, it didn’t scare me enough then; it does now” Luke Skywalker — Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi, is one of the most hotly anticipated Star Wars films of all time, and its arrival has sparked a tidal wave of euphoric expectation amongst the fans. With Mark Hamill, fully returning to the role of Luke Skywalker, the pressure upon Lucasfilm, and director Rian Johnson, to deliver a movie masterpiece is greater than ever.

The recent release of the intense theatrical trailer has excited the fans like never before proving that the Force is truly with Lucasfilm and its president Kathleen Kennedy. In honour of the awesome trailer, the writers of Future of the Force picked some of their favourite moments that they thought everyone should applaud.

Team Choices:

The Millennium Falcon: By Melissa Villy

My favorite scene in the trailer is seeing the Millennium Falcon flying again. The Falcon is by far my favorite ship in any fandom and she always played a role in the original trilogy. Here, it looks like she’s flying through a red and black crystalline structure, perhaps on Crait, with Chewie at the helm. We know she needs two pilots, so I’m curious as to who’s piloting with him. Rey perhaps? Poe? One things for sure, we know the Falcon will play a part once again. I can’t wait to see her fly in December!

Finn vs Phasma: By Phil Roberts

Being hurled into a trash compactor by your arch nemesis is bound to leave a dent in your ego, and Captain Phasma’s imprisonment in the finale of The Force Awakens, was destined to have consequences. Not only was John Boyega’s Finn, a traitor to the First Order but was also the party responsible for her trash compactor incarceration.

The latest The Last Jedi trailer has revealed a tense duel between the duo that will bring their feud to a head. The tension between them is palpable and Phasma’s need for revenge is evident in her wielding of her lethal, silver staff. Their hatred for one another oozes through the screen amidst the fiery destruction raining down around them and their face-off is the stand out moment for me.

My money is on Phasma!

The Rey & Kylo Ren Dynamic: By Katelyn Mathis

Beginning around 2:03 of The Last Jedi trailer, we see Rey. She states, “I need someone to show me my place in all this.” The next shot is of Kylo/Ben offering his hand in a sign of welcoming. While the shots seem to go together, I believe they are in different spots and said to different people.

When you see Rey, her face is lit by the right side, but the light is consistent. Her voice is echoing and the background is dark, like a cave. By contrast, Kylo is obviously in the middle of wreckage with fires all around. I believe Rey is speaking to Luke and Kylo is holding his hand to a different character, probably his mother. While it’s amazing to think that Rey and Kylo could find themselves on somewhat common ground, I don’t believe we can reach that conclusion from this scene. They are one another’s opposites. There cannot be light without dark.

The Evolution of Luke Skywalker: By Darth Elvis

“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now”

The Last Jedi trailer shows us a different Luke Skywalker from what we are used to in the original trilogy. Earlier this year Mark Hamill, was quoted as saying to Director Rian Johnson, “I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character” but it’s clear that the process of making this chapter has had an impact on his earlier comment.

The performance from Mark, in this excerpt from the trailer has me excited to see how the character of Luke, develops in the next instalment; and eager to hear more of Rian’s script. If JJ Abrams, think’s his performance in The Last Jedi is Oscar worthy, that must be one hot dang helluva performance and if the trailer is anything to go by, my money is on Hamill!

Snoke’s Dark Intentions: By The Star Wars Chief

Snoke outstretches his arm and like a cruel teacher he orders Rey to, “Fulfil your destiny.” If the trailer is any indication as to Rey’s true destiny, her future appears to be full of pain and agony. The mysterious villain can be seen in the background while Rey levitates, back severely arched, with a face betraying a new level of torture. I like to think this moment provides more evidence to my theory that Snoke is Darth Plagueis, but nonetheless it is obvious that he is ultra-powerful in the Force, and has to be the Dark Side presence that Emperor Palpatine felt so many years ago. This moment makes it clear that our current Star Wars trilogy is about to take a very dark turn.

Leia’s Turmoil: By Patty Hammond

My favorite moments of The Last Jedi Trailer was the few scenes with Carrie Fisher as General Leia on board ship. The look on her face just screams to me that something is troubling her. My guess is that is the situation she finds herself in and her attempt to reach out to her son, Ben, who is in the area.

Kylo Ren Encounters Leia: By Thomas Storaï

There’s so many great sequences in the trailer but if I had to pick one it would be … the Leia/Kylo Ren scene. First, it gives us a glimpse at the Resistance fleet, showing us brand new ships then it shows Kylo Ren using his Tie Silencer, teasing what looks like an awesome space battle. More importantly, this sequence shows us that despite having killed his father, Kylo Ren is more conflicted than ever before and this is going to be fascinating to see the outcome. You can see he hesitates to shoot the bridge of the Raddus where Leia is, whether he is going to do it remains to be seen. We don’t see them communicating with words but the look on their face say it all.

I think this is going to be a highly emotional scene in the movie and I’m not ready for it.

Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer: By Carl Roberts

My favourite part of the new The Last Jedi trailer must be the scene of Kylo Ren, in his new TIE Silencer, spinning and shooting at the Resistances fleet. Seeing him pause as he senses his mother, General Leia Organa aboard her flagship and watching them both sense the other is chilling. What will Kylo do? Kill his mother or break off his attack? I have my own thoughts on what will happen next. To see if I’m right, I like the rest of the world will have to wait until December!
